CHEF OR LIFE WIRE (THE PRESIDENT):
Like in the natives of Yorùbá (one of the major tribes in
Nigeria) tradition, in which; the Oba (King) is the head. Whatever the king
says hold. Nobody questions or queries whatever the king has said translating
to the Yoruba name for the King, Kábíyèsí (no one questions him). The Kegites
club is also monarchically set up with the Chief (President) as the head. The
chief could have as well been referred to as an Oba but due to the fact that
there cannot be two traditional rulers in a city. The first Kegites’ chief to
be corronated was Chief (now a Professor) Olusegun Adeshina. Other Port-folios
(selective posts: there is no election but selection in Kegites club) in the
club include:
ELDER (VICE PRESIDENT):
The elder is next in rank to the chief. The elder is the
chairman of the elder’s sitting (a one-time in a regime meeting at which a new
chief will be selected). The elders does everything that chief can do in the
absence of the chief but he must not hold the Staff of Office (The Horsetail
that the chief uses to command). The elder also acts as the adviser to the
chief.
PARROT (P.R.O)
The parrot promotes the image of the club, publishes the
club’s activities and passes information across to the populace. The name
Parrot was coined for this port-folio because the native African parrot does
nothing but talk.
FEDA OR FEATHER (THE SECRETARY
GENERAL):
In the olden days, before the advent of pen and pencils, our
forefathers use feather to write so, the name coined for this port-folio. The
feda takes care of all of the clubs documentation. Takes minutes of meeting and
write letters on behalf of the club.
PURSE (THE TREASURE):
Our mothers used to keep money and other valuables things in
the purse. The treasurer of the Kegites’ club is therefore, called the purse.
He keeps the club’s money and he is a signatory to the club’s account.
PROVOST MARSHALL:
The provost marshall functions as the guard to the chief and
to the members of the club. He is always found standing next to chief like a
soldier man. The provost marshall takes charge of the security of the chief and
of the members of the club.
COWRY (FINANCIAL SECRETARY):
Before coins and bills (currency notes) were made and used
as money, cowry used to be the money that is used in making payment. The
Financial Secretary collects money annual dues (annual legesy) etc) from the
komrads and hands it on to the treasurer.
COMMISSIONER FOR GYRATION (C4G OR
C4J):
This officer is the one that oversees gyrational activities,
making sure that gyration is going on smoothly without any form of
interruption.
DIRECTOR OF SONGIES (D. O. S.):
The DOS coordinate the singing activities in the club. He
sings and gives directions on who sings and who echoes the songs.
CRICKET:
The cricket is a special and a highly valued position in the
supremost comradium (the Kegites’ club). Whoever that can sing better than all
other singers in the club is usually assigned to this post i.e. the head of
singers.
HEAD OF DRUMMERS (H. O. D.):
The HOD coordinates the drumming activities of the club. He
gives instructions on who drums (Pòmósìs) and what tune should be produced. The
HOD ensures that there is a balance between the songs and the kinds of tunes
being produced. The HOD instructs other drummers (Drummittos) and direct tunes.
LE POUR OR POURER:
This is the person that is selected to pour holy water in
the shrine. He pours palmwine for everybody in the shrine
TAPPER:
The taper ensures availability of the holy water in the
shrine.
DIRECTOR OF SOCIALS (WELFARER):
The welfarer takes charge of all activities involving
reception (of any kind) of the club at occasions. The position is usually
reserved for ladies/women because she can do it better than men.
TRANSPORT OFFICER (TRANSPORTA OR
KÉTÉKÉTÉ):
In the occasion that the members of the Kegites’ club have
to travel from one place to the other maybe for gyration, this officer takes
charge. The transporter is the one in charge of transporting arrangement
whenever the club has to go for outside functions. He organizes and arranges
for vehicle and ensures that members taken out for gyration (as the case may
be) are returned back to school.
CURATOR:
The curator functions like the abobakú (one that dies with
the King) in the traditional Yorùbá setting to the chief. He goes with the
chief everywhere and he goes on errand for the chief.
PHILLOSOPHER:
The officer that tells stories and relays the history of the
club to members especially, the newly initiated members
ACCOUNTANT/ACCOUNTRESS:
The accountant/accountress sells the palmwine in the shrine.
OLORI (QUEEN)
Like the Yorùbá adage will say Àpónlé kò sí f’Óba tí kò
l’Olorì (There is no respect/honor for any king that has no wife). The most
important officer besides the chief is this last but not the least officer, the
Olorì: The Olorì is the wife or girlfriend to the chief. She is the most
respected officer of the club. While all other officers are selected by the
council of elders, Olorì is selected by no one else but the chief himself.
However, of all the port-folios in the Kegites’ club, the
port-folio of the Olorì is the most competitive. The position usually have more
competitors than any other one (even when it is occupied; it is usually still
being competed for)
